History
Biostee was founded in 1999 when three arable farms, owned by Ard van Gaalen, Arian de Jong and Pieter Hugo Visser were merged. The three farmers met each other in 1999 during a lecture about organic farming and discovered we were all looking for a new challenge. Several months later we not only decided to farm organically, but also merge our farms into one, large scale, operation. We made this move so we could take full advantage of the economies of scale associated with farming the greater acreage. We realised ourselves that many things had to be mechanised, and that one joint crop rotation would be most efficient. By merging smaller fields into large ones, of about 50 acres (20 ha), we are in a better position to produce large volumes of quality products.
In 2003, after our farms had become fully organic, we became well-known with various wholesalers and exporters. In 2004, Biostee agreed to work together with the Tak family from Nieuw-Beijerland, which meant we could use lighter land, and that enables us to grow a wider variety of crops. In 2005, we signed our first agreements made with customers abroad. To this day, we deliver our products to various wholesalers, supermarkets, webshops and processors, in the Netherlands and abroad.
